Where are they now?

Barbara was not your typical Avalon teen.  Her passion for horses and her well written  application to the CIWF earned her a scholarship in 2014.  She is pursuing her dreams and making us all proud.  Here she is at the Annual California Grain and Feed Association Conference in Monterey!  We can’t wait to see what great things she will accomplish in the future. #AvalonStrong Barb King 2018

Halloween in the Garden

For the second year in a row the CIWF was asked to participate in the Catalina Island Conservancy’s celebration of Halloween in the Botanical Gardens.  The Mentoring team offered elote or Mexican corn on the cob with all the fixin’s.  It was well received and the whole event was a family friendly experience full of music, games, a haunted walk and pumpkin carving.  It was a community outing enjoyed by many and we look forward to next year! Learn more about all the Conservancy does to preserve the character of Catalina Island.

Check out more info and the full listing of sponsors for 2017.  Tickets are still available and with the local Festival of Art taking place the same weekend visitors will have plenty to keep themselves entertained!

SCE – STEM scholarships

Scholarship interviews were held May 17, 2017 for the graduating seniors of Avalon High School.  Seventeen applicants submitted applications consisting of a 300 word essay and other short answer questions.  They were given an in-person interview with 5 members of the Forum to make their best impression and explain why they were deserving of a CIWF scholarship award.  Last year SCE’s local executives reached out to the Forum and created a $5000 STEM scholarship to help ladies interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.  A check presentation ceremony was held at the annual Wine Festival last September (pictured above).

The scholarship board made their determinations and chose 13 young ladies to honor, disbursing a total of $16,000, including the Edison STEM grant.  The final mentoring event will be held June 4th on the beach in Avalon to honor all the girls and announce the winners of the awards!  They will be formally acknowledged at the graduation ceremony June 15th at 4:00pm at the Casino Theater.
If you would like to support the Forum in their fundraising efforts please call (323)686-2493 or email
